Bernie Fingleton

At Aber I was an undergrad then a postgrad PhD student 1967-1973 Eileen and I were married at St Richard’s RC Church, Atherton, Lancashire in 1971 I was appointed Lecturer then Senior Lecturer in Geography at CCAT (now Anglia Ruskin University) where I worked from 1973-1990. Then from 1990-1995 I worked as Senior Economist and Manager of European Services at Cambridge Econometrics. From 1995-2007 I was a Lecturer, then Reader, in Geographical Economics at University of Cambridge.

From January-July, 1999 I was a Jean Monnet Fellow in the Department of Economics, at the European University Institute, Florence, Italy. I was Co-Editor, Regional Studies (2002-2005); Teaching Fellow in Land Economy, St John's College, Cambridge (2003-2007) and Founding Editor-in-Chief, Spatial Economic Analysis (2005-2015).

We then moved to Scotland where I took up the appointment of Professor of Economics at Strathclyde University (2007-2011), but then we returned to Cambridge where I was Senior Visiting Fellow, Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge (2011-2013). Since July 2013 I have been Director of Research (part-time), Dept of Land Economy, University of Cambridge and I also lecture part-time in the Dept of Land Economy, teaching part of a course on urban and land economics and also occasional lectures to post-grads. I currently supervise one PhD student and some undergraduate dissertations.

Away from work, I try to keep fit visiting the gym and cycling (short distances). Occasionally I go up to Old Trafford for football. We have four children, please see Eileen’s Bio for details. Following Aber, we lived in two houses in Cambridge, one end of terrace, then an Edwardian terrace, from 1973 until 2007. In Scotland, we bought a property near to Bridge of Allan, with a view of Stirling castle. We now live in Wantage, Oxfordshire (formerly in Berkshire) which is 15 miles South of Oxford in the Vale of White Horse local authority district. We are currently in the process of selling our house and buying one (we think) in Sutton Courtenay, which is a village on the Thames close to Oxford and where our eldest daughter and family live.
